The main island of Orkney (known as Mainland) can be reached by plane or ferry. There is an airport at Kirkwall and ferries operate to Stromness, Burwick and Saint Margaret's Hope from the Scottish Mainland ports.
Orkney Ferries operate two services to Hoy, one a passenger only service from Stromness to Moaness and the other a car ferry from Houton to Lyness. During the summer months although the crossings are daily and frequent, it is advisable to book all car ferries.
The cottages, West Linksness and Nether Linksness are in the north end of the island of Hoy, 20 minutes drive from Lyness and a short 300 metre walk from Moaness.
